| Alumni NewsAlumni in the News - SeptemberDespite vacation season, plenty of Cal Poly alumni made headlines recently. Business alum and up-and-coming singer-guitarist Dane Drewis competed for a spot on "American Idol." Another business alum recognized as an expert in energy markets left The Federal Reserve to head a research center at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Liberal Arts alum Bruce Ellis's scientific research on environmental impacts on neurobiology was selected as the best journal article of the year by the American Psychological Association. More on Alumni in the NewsCal Poly Again Best in West in US News RankingsFor the 18th year in a row, Cal Poly has been rated the best public-master's university in the West by U.S. News & World Report, in its 2011 America 's Best Colleges guidebook. The magazine ranked Cal Poly No. 6 among all private and public universities in the West. Cal Poly is ranked in a category of universities which grant bachelor's and master's degrees. Cal Poly’s College of Engineering also moved up one spot - No. 2 public engineering program in the nation, just behind the U.S. Military Academy. Cal Poly was featured on the Aug. 17 "Today Show" video segment on the U.S. News rankings as one of the nation's "Up and Comer" universities to watch.
