(December, 2009) -- On Nov. 17, the California State University Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a 2010-11 budget request for Governor Schwarzenegger and the legislature that includes an additional $884 million in state General Fund support that CSU is calling its “recover and reinvest” budget.

This request follows a year that saw the greatest budget reduction in CSU’s history – a reduction of roughly $600 million or 20 percent below 2008-09.

In order to manage this severe reduction in state support, the system and its 23 campuses -- including Cal Poly -- have implemented employee furloughs, increased student fees, enrollment reduction and another $163 million in reductions throughout the system.

In addition, the CSU has been forced to reduce enrollment by 40,000 by next fall -- consistent with the drop in resources needed to hire faculty and staff to provide students the courses and services they need to succeed in a timely manner.

CSU prepares more students than any other university in the fields that make California work: agriculture, information technology, communications, business, tourism, life sciences, and education.

Reinvestment in the CSU is essential to sustained economic recovery in California because of the CSU’s role in graduating well-prepared students into the workforce.

With your help, we can build the case for reinvestment. Write Governor Schwarzenegger today and tell him what CSU has done for you and the importance of higher education to current and future students.

We must all work together during the next year to make our voices heard, and to help open the doors to higher education for students. Our state’s economy depends on the CSU graduating students with the knowledge and skills to make California’s future brighter.
