EVENT DETAILS:
The homespun Capitola Begonia Festival has its roots in the moist, cool coastal climate of Santa Cruz County, California, which is eminently hospitable to the tuberous begonia. GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) alumni from two Cal Poly Alumni chapters (Greater Monterey Bay and San Jose/San Francisco) have joined forces to enter a float, "Yellow Submarine," made out of fresh begonia flowers in this year’s Nautical Parade.
Sunday, August 31
8:30 a.m. - noon - Begonia Festival Morning Activities
The Begonia Festival starts early with Horseshoes on the Sand and Chalk Art on the Seawall and Begonia Hat Creations. For the complete schedule click here .
10 a.m. - Float Decorating and Viewing
Stop by an assist the Cal Poly alumni group put the fnishing touches on their "Yellow Submarine" entry. If you'd like to help, contact Steve McShane (SS, '98)at (831) 970-4141 for the specific decorating site.
1 - 3 p.m. - Begonia Festival 56th Annual Nautical Parade
Cheer on Cal Poly Alumni "Yellow Submarine." Begonia covered barges float down Soquel Creek to the Lagoon. Great views from the Stockton Bridge, Cliff Avenue and Wharf Road.
6 p.m. - Cal Poly BBQ at Swanton Pacific Ranch
Join GOLD Alumni hosts at Swanton's Al Smith House for a Cal Poly BBQ and drinks. Beer and Central Coast wine tasting will be available for 21 and over.
