Photo Album Name: 2008-09 PolyLink Photos of the Month

Megan Delahanty (B.S., Graphic Communications, 1985) is the September PolyLink Alumni Photo of the Month winner for this shot of herself and her sherpa on the summit of Mt. Everest in 2009. Really. On May 23, 2009, she reached the summit of Mount Everest with Himalayan Experience, a team being filmed for Discovery Channel. The show ("Everest - Beyond the Limit" will air in November or December, and Delehanty is one of the featured climbers. )  
Curtis Shupe and son Tommy (then four) at the Chandelier 'Drive thru' Tree park in Leggett, California. Shupe, an architecture alum, is the winner for this shot from a family vacation in 2004. Shupe and his family now live in Palm Desert, where he's a licensed architect in private practice. See more of Shupe's shots on his PolyLink personal page (login required).  
A Man and a Fish: Jonathan Tsui (Bio, 2006) landed this Dorado off of Baja in Mexico -- all 40 lbs. of it. He brought it back to San Luis Obispo and hosted a dnner for 20 friends -- and still had 10 lbs. leftover to give away. Tsui's still connected to the sea. He's in the Navy attending Explosive Ordinance Disposal school in Florida. And he's the July 2009 Photo of the Month winner for this shot.  
Abiah Shaffer (B.S., Ag Business, 2006) is the June 2009 PolyLink Photo of the Month winner for this shot of herself (right) and pal Carol Boland (left) on the Port San Luis Pier. The occasion was Boland's June 2008 graduation from Cal Poly (M.A. in Biology). Shaffer minored in water science and agricultural policy and now works with an international consulting firm in Ft. Collins, Colo. She works with GIS mapping.  
That's Mike McCain, a lieutenant with the Navy Corps of Civil Engineers, on assignment in Afghanistan in 2005-06. McCain's unit is in charge of logistics, engineering support and project management for Navy and Marine Operations. He's still serving in the Military -- and he's the May 2009 alumni PolyLink Photo of the Month winner for this shot.  
Byron Wong is the April 2009 PolyLink Photo of the Month winner for this shot taken overlooking Rio. Byron Wong (B.S., Architecture, 1999) is this month's PolyLink Photo of the Month winner for this shot overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. "I think the Photos of the Month are great! It inspired me to take a trip to Brazil and show my Mustang Pride," he said. The photo was taken in the Tijuca Forest in Rio de Janeiro overlooking Sugarloaf Mountain during Carnival 2009. Spring Wildflowers on the Carrizo Plain.

Alumna Lisa Marrone (B.S., Natural Resources Management, 1980) is the PolyLink Photo of the Month winner for this beautiful shot of spring wildflowers on the Carrizo Plain north of San Luis Obispo. "I took it in spring of 1998, after the heavy 1997 El Niño rain season. It's off Highway 58 east of Elkhorn Road," she says.  
February 2009 PolyLink Photo of the Month winners are Pedro Plascencia and Baley (Thomas) Plascencia. They are a Mustang Marriage couple, and they love to travel. This shot was taken on a 2007 trip to Washington, D.C. It was great, notes Baley -- and a place they'd love to go back to. January's PolyLink Photo of the Month winner is Joe Tarica (B.S., Journalism, English, '93) for this photo if his son Josh at a soccer game in Atascadero when he was 4 years old. Tarica is the Presentation Editor at the San Luis Obispo Tribune, where he oversees the production side of the newsroom, including photographers, designers and copy editors. Natural Resources Management alumna Jennifer Arrowsmith is the December 2008 Photo of the Month winner for this shot, taken in summer of 2005 on the way back down from the summit of Mt. Whitney. Mt. Whitney (in California )is the highest peak in the lower 48 states at 14,500 feet tall. It's a 22 mile trek to the summit and back. Arrowsmith climbed the peak after two years of waiting for a climb permit through the Mt. Whitney Lottery system.  Only 100 climbers per day are allowed.

Intrepid English alumna Bridget Persons heads to the Pongal festival in Madurai, southern India. Persons spent a month there on a Rotary Group Study Exchange. Persons is now a teacher at her high school alma mater: The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.  
Julie Terry Walz (B.S., Industrial Engineering, '96)is the October 2008 Photo of the Month winner for this shot of husband Mark Walz (B.S., Electrical Engineering, '80) and their daughter Hannah picking pumpkins in Oct. '07 at the Avila Valley Barn. As if Hanna wasn't cute enough, Mark is wearing a Cal Poly Mustangs shirt -- putting the POM judges over the top.
