Background: Cal Poly plays a vital role in California's economy
The University has 120,000 living alumni, and countless more parents, friends, and supporters. It produces some 4,000 graduates every year -- grads ready to step directly into the workforce and power industries across the state and the West.
Because Cal Poly is a public university, state and federal governments play a huge role in defining how Cal Poly accomplishes its mission.
Through legislation and regulation, the government plays a role in virtually every aspect of higher education -- and every aspect of Cal Poly.
Among other things, the state and federal government:
-
Set faculty and state compensation rates
-
Define funding and resource levels and budgets
-
Set student tuition rates
-
Establish rules, funding and priorities for building new classrooms, research labs and student governments
At times, Cal Poly needs help in educating legislators and government agencies about how their actions may help or hinder the University and other institutions of higher education.
That's why the University is asking alumni and friends to become Cal Poly Advocates.
